Film Thickness Is The Industrial Epoxy Flooring Specification That Matters
Industrial epoxy flooring is sold by the square foot but it is bought by the mil. Two industrial epoxy flooring quotes that both say epoxy can differ by a factor of eight in how much material ends up on your floor.
A thin roll applied coating runs ten to twenty mils and suits dry storage, stockrooms and light pedestrian areas. A high build coating at twenty to forty mils is the usual answer for warehousing with light forklift traffic. A broadcast quartz or flake system at sixty to a hundred and twenty five mils is what goes into a manufacturing area with real impact and wheel loading. An epoxy mortar, trowelled at a quarter of an inch or more with aggregate through it, is for heavy engineering and waste handling floors.
Solids content decides how much industrial epoxy flooring you get in one pass. A hundred percent solids epoxy has nothing in it to evaporate, so the wet film and the dry film are close to the same thickness and ten mils or more goes down in a single coat. Water and solvent borne products lose more than half their thickness as they dry, which is exactly why a cheap quote can honestly say two coats and still leave you with six mils of floor.
Where Industrial Epoxy Flooring Is The Wrong Choice
We will tell you when it is. Industrial epoxy flooring is not the answer for hot washdown, steam cleaning or thermal shock, because it expands roughly three times as much as concrete does and the shear from that lands on the bond line. In those buildings the material is urethane cement flooring instead.
It is also not the answer where organic acids are part of production. Lactic, acetic, citric and hop acids will break down a standard epoxy over a season of exposure, which rules it out of dairy, brewing and meat processing. Where aggressive chemistry is confined to a bunded area rather than the whole floor, a novolac system on the chemical resistant floor coatings page is usually the better buy.
Standard industrial epoxy flooring also ambers and chalks under ultraviolet light within a year or so, so anything in direct sun through a skylight or inside a dock door needs a urethane or polyaspartic topcoat over it rather than clear epoxy.
What Industrial Epoxy Flooring Preparation Has To Do
Industrial epoxy flooring bonds mechanically, so the profile has to be at least as deep as the system is thick. A quarter inch mortar over a lightly ground slab has nothing to key into and will come off in sheets. A twelve mil roll coat over a scarified floor will telegraph every ridge and sit under thickness on the high points.
We shot blast the open field and diamond grind the perimeters, the column bases and the corners a blaster cannot reach. Oil and grease come out chemically before any of that starts, because blasting an oil soaked slab drives the contamination deeper and grinding smears it across the floor.
